Out of a Job, Not Out of Beauty

6c5891e7c7f86ff325e5440d5fddec63

I have been MIA lately, because I found out on Friday that the company I was working for was closing.  Tuesday was my last day at my job, and while it is sad, I hope that there are better opportunities ahead.  Since I will be out of a job, I thought it would be great to focus on budget beauty.  More specifically, what types of beauty items you can get at the DOLLAR STORE!!!

So, I was feeling a little sorry for myself, I thought what better way to cheer myself up than to go shopping?!   I had to be mindful of my finances however, and I decided to go to the Dollar Store and see what kinds of products are marketed to those who have a smaller beauty budget.

I was incredibly surpised to find brand name productd available in the Health and Beauty Aisle of my nearest Dollar Tree store.  I was met with products from LA Colors, Wet N Wilds, Essie, and Milani.

I did not want to grab everything that was there because it was inexpensive.  I tried to be choosy about my products and only picked up items that I would wear.

Milani Glitzy Glamour Gloss, and 3D Glitzy Glamour Gloss

Shades Left to Right: 01 First Class, Fashion Diva, In Vogue

Swatches Top to Bottom: Fashion Diva, In Vogue, 01 First Class

After a few minutes, In Vogue and Fashion Diva which are the 3D Glitzy Glamour Glosses changed composition a little, and  the color almost started to separate.  However, the 01 Fashion Diva Glamour Gloss is highly pigmented and seems like a great formula.  Definitely worth the dollar I paid for it.

Carnivale Eau De Parfum Spray

Okay, I knew when I was getting ready to buy this, it was either going to be a hit or miss.  This was a bad choice on my part.  Yeah I probably wont be using this perfume at all.  I sprayed it on a shirt, and it smells like it cost a dollar.  It was supposed to be an impression of Circus Britney Spears and while I’ve never smelled Circus, I’m not so sure Carnivale smells remotely like the real thing.  This was a big fat dollar store miss.

Essue Sleek Stick Nail Applique

I was surprised to see these, nail appliques, and I haven’t tried them out, but I have no doubt they will look great.

So cute and festive for the upcoming Halloween season!  I can’t wait to play with these lashes!

So there you have it, there are some quality beauty products at the dollar store but my advice is to be choosy about what you get and not grab everything up just because it’s a dollar.

I’m glad to be back in my blogging groove after my job loss.  I have so much more to share.

Have you had any luck at the dollar store?  Do you have any budget beauty tips and tricks?

Walgreens Mini Haul-lelujah!

This is a pic of the actual location via Yelp.

This is a pic of the actual location via Yelp.

I want to start this off by sending my praises to the woman who works in the beauty department at the Walgreens near my job in Pleasanton, California. She is beyond nice and so helpful. She went out of her way to show me where things were, and gave me suggestions for products. it was like I was at the Walgreens version of Sephora, except she was more helpful!

I really went in to see if they had any Halloween collections available but all they really had was the Wet n Wild Fantasy Makers collection which I did not like at all.  Dare I say it looked a little like Dollar Store no-name brand makeup?  Or maybe I’ve grown out of the glitter stage.  I did however pick up a tube of the colored mascara in blue.

I somehow scored a Wet N Wild brush from their Spring collection. It was hanging out randomly by itself, so I snagged it because it was cute. Doh! Wet N Wild MegaLast Lip Color in 6 shades, Kiss Lashes, Wet n Wild Fantasty Makers Color Blast Mascara in blue. I HAD to get candy and gum, and the small silver box on the bottom was a serum sample the nice Walgreens employee gave me.

I didn’t take a picture of all of the items I purchased because 1: this is supposed to be a quick post, and 2: I just didn’t think about it last night.

I picked up six more MegaLast Lip Color to add to my collection.  (I love these little cheapies!)  The shade I purchased were: Cherry Picking, Stoplight Red, Red Velvet, Don’t Blink Pink, Mauve Outta Here, and Cherry Bomb.

I also couldn’t resist picking up these Kiss lashes.  They are packaged in a masquerade mask style, where you can hold the handle and put it up to your face to “see” what they would look like on.  While the plastic is hard to see through, so you can’t do that, the packaging is cute none the less.

The following picture is horrible, so I apologize ahead of time.

As for my candy, well I keep that in one of my bathroom drawers cause you never know when hunger will strike in mid-blowdry.

There you have it folks, probably the most underwhelming haul you will look at today.

By the way, whoever came up with he idea for all of the cashiers to say “Be well.” before you leave Walgreens was GENIUS.

Tell me what Halloween beauty collections you’re looking forward to.  I want to be on the lookout for some good stuff.

Daiso Haul! Super Kawaii!

unnamed

I am really lucky to live in the super culturally diverse Bay Area, California.  As a result of the diversity, there are tons of different culturally centric stores around.  My husband and I happened to be in the Fremont area when I remembered there was a Daiso store nearby.

If you’re not familiar with Daiso, it is a Japanese dollar store.  Almost all of the products in Daiso are $1.50 unless otherwise marked, and the selection of items available is awesome.  They carry kitchen supplies, household items, garden supplies, a gift section, and a BEAUTY SECTION!  You know I made a beeline to the beauty area.

HAUL TIME!!!

Here Are My Purchases All At $1.50 Each:

Three pairs of eyelashes.

photo 5

Four Eyelash Cases.  Each case hold 3 pairs of lashes, and a small bottle of lash glue.  I purchased four cases because that is what they had left in stock.  I am looking to keep one or two cases and sell the others because I know this is a desirable case and a lot of people are not fortunate enough to live near a Daiso store.

photo 4

Two dual eyeliners and two mascaras.  One of the mascaras came with a mirror built into the tube.  The dual eyeliners have a pencil liner on one end and a liquid liner on the other.

photo 5

One BB Face Mask pack.  This is a sheet mask and I’ve been wanting to try one for a long time, I will be reviewing this item separately when I try it.

photo 1

Two pack of blackhead clearing strips.  I got these for my husband to try out, I will also review these separately.

photo 2

One face cleaning brush.  It’s just a pod shaped silicone face brush with a handle on the back.  Not sure how my face will like this but I figured it was worth a try.

photo 4

One bunny coffee cup for work.  I loved this mug because it has a ceramic lid I can put on when I am away from my desk.

photo 3

I also purchased two folding fans to keep in my purse because I am always hot, and folding fans are classy.

How is your long weekend going?  Have you ever been to Daiso?  Have you tried any of these products before?  Talk to me!

Rite Aid the Rite Way-Haul Time

The Pearly Gates

The Pearly Gates

Yesterday I took a trip to my local Rite Aid store on the way home after a long and busy day out.  My loving and supportive husband went into the store with me and walked around and did his own thing.  So when it came time to check out, my husband was behind me not really paying attention, until the male cashier started to talk about how expensive the makeup items were and YELLED out my total. Which of course caught my husband’s attention.  DARN CASHIER!  Sigh.

Poor husband, bored out of his mind.

Spotted: a poor husband, bored out of his mind.

I picked up a nice lot of different products that I’ve been hearing about, and some that just caught my eye in store.  I will be reviewing most of these on their own throughout the next week as I try them.

I can’t wait to try these products!  It’s going to be a fun week.

How often do you do drugstore hauls?  Do you like drugstore makeup?  What are some of your favorite brands and products?

So I’m Going to Sephora This Weekend, Wish Me Luck

In anticipation of payday, I always stalk Sephora.com to see what the next addition to my beauty arsenal should be.  Throughout the month I am constantly adding items to my cart and wishlist and it’s actually a good thing to have a clear idea of what I want to pick up so I don’t go overboard in store.

With that said, here are some of my current “wanna pick-ups.”

GIVENCHY
Les Mini Prismes

s1625359-main-hero

This small kit comes with an eyeshadow quad, a face powder, a blush, and a brush, all tucked into a stylish case.  This kit retails for $39.

The Specs:

– 0.10 oz Le Prisme Yeux Quator in Purple Show 71
– 0.10 oz Le Prisme Visage Mat Face Powder in Beige Mouseeline 84
– 0.10 oz Le Prisme Blush in Vintage Pink 22
– Mini powder brush
– Mini eye shadow applicator

I would like to purchase this kit because these are great color combinations for a good everyday face.  These colors look very wearable for the office environment I work in.  I have heard that some are disappointed in the size, but I think this would be a great kit for someone wanting to try out the brand.

STILA
Eyes Are the Window™ Shadow Palettes

s1631944-main-hero

I am swooning over the colors in this palette, especially that aqua blue!  Sigh!  There are 4 Eyes Are the Window Palettes and this one in particular is called, “Body.”  I am a girl who loves color, so these shades appeal to me much more than the neutral palettes out there.  This palette retails for $49.

The Specs:

– Look book for step by step looks
– 12 x 0.51 oz Eye shadows

There are some things you just want without needing to have a reason and this is just one of those things!

GUERLAIN
Terracotta Bronzing Powder

s1326289-main-hero

I have never been a bronze wearer, but since I am trying to open my mind to new makeup looks, I thought this would be a great pick.  I am interested in learning how to contour and this looks like a great product for that.  This Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder comes in 8 shades and retails for $52.   I have not settled on a shade, and can’t wait to test this out in my local Sephora.

These are just a couple of my picks, and even though I think I have a formulated plan, I am sure I will detour and walk out with at least one item I didn’t expect to buy.

Do you research before you shop?  Do you go overboard at Sephora like I do?

Mini Drugstore Haul

It’s been hot as Hades here in my part of Northern California!  I work in an office building and my lunchtimes are best spent outside. Alone. In my car. Since it has been too hot for me to sit in my car for an hour at the hottest part of the day, I have been trying to find places to go so I can soak up some glorious free A/C!  Yesterday my lunch hour had me wandering around Walgreens, picking up items that I saw last night on Irene Mahmud’s YouTube Channel. She was doing her full face look, and I love her style of makeup, and plus she is brown like me, so I thought I would try to see if I could emulate her look.

My main reason for my trip to Walgreens was to pick up a couple of Maybelline and L’Oreal products from the video, but as I was perusing the cosmetic aisle of course I had to pick up a few other items.  (Of course! Insert my husband’s eyeroll here.)

Let’s just get on with my purchases.

I am a true red lip girl, and I was so excited to see E.L.F.’s The Fairest of Them All Lip Collection from their limited edition Snow White Collection. I checked out the Ariel collection a couple of weeks ago and didn’t really see anything that interested me.  It looked a little like child play makeup, so I decided to pass.  I love the packaging of the Snow White collection and this set really caught my interest.  It features a lip stain, a shimmer gloss, and a lip balm.  I am excited to try this collection, and for $4.99 I feel like it was a good buy.

Maybelline FitMe foundation in 315, and Maybelline FitMe concealer in Sand.  These are two of the three products that brought me on my shopping excursion in the first place.  I actually put these two products on today before spending most of the day at the beach and I am surprised to say I am really happy with this foundation and concealer.  They held up better than some of my higher end face products and for the most part stayed put all day.

The foundation had medium coverage with one layer and it made my skin look flawless, while not feeling heavy on my skin.  Shade 315 really matched my NC42 skin nicely.

I liked the color of the FitMe concealer, and it was a great thin formula for everyday wear.  It covered my dark circles nicely without emphasizing them like other thicker formulas I have tried.

I got lucky as Walgreens had Maybelline cosmetics on sale for 40% off. These two products would work wonderfully for daily wear without looking cakey.  I will definitely be repurchasing after I run out.

(I did use a primer before applying the foundation, set my concealer with Ben Nye Banana Powder, and set my face with L’Oreal TrueMatch Powder.)

photo 4

This L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder was the third item I was on the hunt for at Walgreens.  I purchased this powder in N6 and it set my foundation beautifully.  I didn’t feel like it deposited too much color when I brushed it on, so no caked on feel, which worked well for my beach day, because of course I would wear full face to the beach. I will make this my go to setting powder for my everyday full face. Also it didn’t oxidize and make me orange!  Yay!

photo 5

There’s not much to say about Jordana.  They are a no frills brand but I have used them for a long time because they are CHEAP! I only buy their lip liners because they do stay on and work well.  I buy them in colors I want to try, and if I really like how the color looks on me, then I will try to find a dupe in a higher-end brand.  For my red lip, I usually like to line in Jordana’s Auburn or Brick lip liners and apply my MAC Russian Red, or Cailyn balm in Big Apple.

I can’t help but take a trip around the cosmetics aisle when I hit a drugstore, and I usually walk out with something!  I could own all of the luxury brands in the world, and I would still pick up tried and trues from Walgreens, CVS, Target, etc.

What are some of your favorite drugstore cosmetic brands? Anything you can’t live without?
